Some history for you …
In or around 1993 the public toilets on Earl Shilton, Wood Street car park were demolished. At this time Hinckley and Bosworth Council had an overall Conservative majority. The old toilets were replaced eventually with modern block. on Wood Street.
Fifteen years later, in 2008, the toilets on Wood Street demolished. I understand that the decision for this was made when the council had an overall Conservative majority.
There were questions asked in council Oct/Nov 2007 - with an answer from Sandra Francks stating, “we can’t replace them yet - they cost £27000 a year to run.”
NB Barwell public toilets refurbished at least twice since 1993 and Hinckley’s ‘state of the art’ toilets - won prizes for a while. They are now somewhat neglected, but still open.
I’m sure that I read somewhere, perhaps the Hinckley Times, that a local Conservative councillor was making urgent replacement of the Earl Shilton toilets a priority.
In 2009 there were still no public toilets in Earl Shilton. Good news though, Hinckley and Bosworth Council, now with a Lib Dem majority, saved around £27,000.
Again in 2009 we were told that we were, “waiting for a decision on replacement toilets from Earl Shilton and Barwell Forward.”
Whatever happened to this group? Might they have been one of the quangos swept away after the 2010 election. Anyhow, obviously no decision was made.
Four more years went by with every opportunity for the Lib Dem council in Hinckley to do the right thing and replace the toilets. Sadly no action but around £160000 has been saved so far.
Amazingly, with the 2015 local election almost in sight, a campaign is started by a local tory councillor to urgently replace the public toilets beginning with a petition and photo opportunity.
I wonder who voted to demolish the old toilets and why it has taken almost seven years for some sign of them being replaced? Can anyone remember?
A bit more local history for you.
February 1994, Triumph Motorcycles finally get plans passed for their new factory by a council with Conservative majority.
Does anyone remember the political party that had a campaign opposing this extremely successful venture? Here’s a clue, not Labour.
I wonder which political party was making an attempt to block progress in this borough?
And finally, what about the proposed “Sports Hub” in the vicinity of Hinckley’s new football stadium? This was going to be the intended home of a fantastic new leisure centre for the borough. How is it that the new build is on land of highly suspect quality in the middle of town?
